New Orleans schools slowly recover

Before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans last August, officials in the
city estimated school enrollment of more than 60,000 students.

But six months after the devastating storm, the reconstituted public school
system, along with charters, counts just over 5,000 students who have
returned for the remainder of the school year, although it has room for
10,600.

"With ... the current availability in existing Orleans district and charter
schools, every returning child should have a place," said New Orleans
Parish School Board President Phyllis Landrieu.
