Omar Khalidi, an independent scholar and a staff member at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, has found himself
at the center of a recent controversy over a proposed headcount of Muslims
in the Indian armed forces to determine the representation of the minority
community in the military. Critics charged that the decision by the Indian
Government to conduct the census, a move that has since been dropped
following furor in Parliament, had much to do with a book written by
Khalidi in 2003. Khalidi first talked about the under-representation of
Muslims in the armed forces in the book Khaki and Ethnic Violence in India.
