'It's Amazing, Children Really Want to Believe'

Steve Abrams is no ventriloquist; while performing for children, this
puppeteer does not hide the fact that he's providing the voices for his
characters.

The 56-year-old University City resident says that if he does it right, the
young audience will accept that the object on his hand -- whether it's a
brown paper bag with a face drawn on it or an elaborate string puppet from
India -- is a separate entity with its own personality.

"It's amazing! They really want to believe that this little character can
have a life of its own," says Abrams, who earns his living performing for
children at schools, museums, festivals and the occasional birthday party.
