Council Delays Brooks' Call For Emergency

The City Council agreed to give city officials and the police union another
week to reach an agreement on working hours for patrols in high-crime
areas.

Negotiations between Police Chief Wayne Tucker, City Administrator Deborah
Edgerly, and the Oakland Police Officers Association (OPOA) have bogged
down.

City Councilmember Desley Brooks had suggested declaring a State of
Emergency because "progress has not been made on the issue of redeployment"
as the city's crime rate soars. Brooks added, "The police union said they
were done negotiating. I think we should have taken some action on this
issue. I'm disappointed that we didn't."
