Dr. Raye Richardson and her late husband Dr. Julian Richardson gave birth
to Marcus Books from their Success Printing Company, which started in San
Francisco in 1945. Dr. Richardson says, "It is important for a people who
descended from slavery, a time when it was a capital crime for Blacks to be
caught reading, to be literate."

Black bookstores encourage literacy, education, racial pride and dignity.

Angela Blackwell, another Oakland resident, was responsible for inspiring
Tavis Smiley to publish "The Covenant With Black America," currently the
fastest selling book in the country. Marcus already has more than 600 back
orders.
