Students Address Racism; Encinal High Teens Seek Unity

"Recognition is nothing unless change precedes it. We don't want to be
known, we want to be heard. We want change in school systems as well as in
society as a whole. We are a part of the young black youth, and we demand a
future that will allow us to expand our minds to the farthest extent
possible."

These are the words of Awandre Lee, senior at Encinal High School in
Alameda.

She and Te Ana Williams and Monique French have committed themselves to
addressing racial issues and uplifting the black community at their school.
