Damita Davis-Howard Makes Labor History

Damita Davis-Howard of Oakland, social justice activist and long time
labor, religious, and community leader, made history when she was appointed
as executive director of the statewide Service Employees International
Union (SEIU) Local 535, becoming the first African-American woman to direct
a statewide union in California.

"I'm proud to be the first African-American woman to lead a 30,000-member
union of this size and diversity. This is an example of the kinds of
changes that SEIU and the Change To Win Federation are making," said
Davis-Howard, who was appointed last year.

She was outspoken during the last Special Election.
