Mandela Gateway Wins Redevelopment Award

The California Redevelopment Association has given an Award of Excellence
to a West Oakland project: Mandela Gateway.

The plan was initiated by Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) as a HOPE VI
revitalization project to demolish the 46-unit Westwood Gardens public
housing project, constructed in the early 1960s.

OHA and BRIDGE Housing Corporation acquired two additional sites, a
CalTrans-owned property used as a parking lot and a privately owned
property with an existing truck repair business. The project transformed
the distressed public housing project and underutilized lots into 168 unit
mixed-income housing with approximately 20,000 square foot commercial
space.
