When Willie Sutton, the infamous bank robber, was arrested, he was asked
why he robbed banks. Willie looked at the questioner as if he were a fool
and answered, "Because that's where the money is." I asked a thug why he
had changed venues from East and West Oakland to North Oakland and the Lake
Merritt area. He looked at me as though I was a fool and answered, "Because
that's where the money is." Parenthetically, I met this thug on a picket
line that I formed to try to get work for the unemployed of Oakland.
The citizens of affluent Oakland were out in force at the first council
meeting in March. There were hundreds of picket signs outside of City Hall
decrying ...
