Some say they do not understand what Ron Dellums means when he says he
"supports development that does not destroy diversity." Why the lack of
understanding? The dictionary defines diversity as the condition of being
composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities. In English, he is
saying that he supports development that does not destroy Oakland's current
condition of being composed of people of many distinct backgrounds,
cultures, languages, races, ethnicities, and socio-economic conditions.
Yet, still heads are being scratched in befuddlement. I contend that the
problem arises from a perceptual "blind spot" rather than from insufficient
linguistic ...
