The Chicago City Council approved a measure Wednesday prohibiting restaurants from selling foie gras, the goose liver delicacy.

City council member Joe Moore sponsored the ordinance on the grounds that it is inhumane to force-feed geese to increase their liver size. He defended the measure from those who argued that politicians have better things to do than telling diners what they can and cannot eat.

"Our city is better for taking a stance against the cruelty of foie gras," Moore said.

Mayor Richard Daley opposed the measure.
