Conductor Daniel Barenboim will become La Scala's principal guest conductor in a collaboration between the Milan opera house and Berlin's Staatsoper, participants said Monday.

The announcement was made a year after conductor Riccardo Muti resigned from his post amid increasingly tense relations with the orchestra.

Barenboim, who will remain general music director at Staatsoper, will inaugurate the collaboration between two of Europe's oldest opera houses at La Scala with Verdi's Requiem Mass in November 2007 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Arturo Toscanini.
