China promised to step up support for North Korea as the North's foreign minister began a weeklong visit to China on Tuesday amid efforts to restart nuclear disarmament talks.

Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun met with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing, who said, "China will keep communications with DPRK and step up mutual understanding and support," the official Xinhua News Agency said, referring to the North by the initials of its formal name. It didn't elaborate on Li's promise of support.

Paek also met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Xinhua said, without giving details of their talks.
