PARIS, Jun. 2, 2006 (IPS/GIN) -- Many residents of the Pyrenees,
especially shepherds, are afraid of a hungry giant that stands more
than two meters tall, weighs up to 200 kilograms, multiplies
relatively rapidly and doesn't respect international borders.
The giant is the brown or Slovenian bear (Ursus arctos), which
until recently was thought to be practically extinct in many
European countries, but is now being reintroduced in the mountains
of the French-Spanish border.
Some 15 bears will be released in the Pyrenees over the next few
years, according to an agreement signed May 22 by France, Spain and
Andorra.
