Article: Vietnam's prime minister asks National Assembly to step down, clearing way for new leader

Vietnam Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on Friday officially asked the lawmaking National Assembly for permission to step down, a move that was expected after he was not re-elected to the all-powerful Politburo in April.

Earlier this month, Khai told reporters at the opening of the National Assembly session that he had nominated Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for the job. The Assembly will vote on the new leader later this month.

"I would like to ask the National Assembly to allow me to leave the prime minister position before my term ends," said Khai, 72, whose full term officially expires in July ...
