Police in Chechnya killed rebel leader Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev on Saturday in a special operation in Argun, east of the provincial capital, Russian officials said.

Moscow-backed Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov also said rebels under Sadulayev's command were planning to stage a terror attack in Argun, Sadulayev's hometown, at the time of the summit of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations in St. Petersburg in mid-July, the Interfax news agency reported.
