The World Cup got its first high-profile casualty Thursday and its first surprise success.
The second-ranked Czech Republic exited after losing its final Group E game 2-0 to Italy, which won its group and advanced. Ghana beat the United States 2-1 to reach the second round in its first tournament and send the Americans home.
Italy will play its next game in Kaiserslautern on Monday and will find out its opponent later Thursday when Group F concludes. Ghana will be in action Tuesday against the winner of that group, which is likely to be defending champion Brazil.
