Fed: Howard denies promising no interest rate rise

CANBERRA, Aug 8 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard says the coalition is still a safer
bet than Labor to keep interest rates low, following the third hike since the 2004 election.
Mr Howard urged voters concerned about the rises to maintain faith with the coalition
government, despite the official cash rate hitting six per cent for the first time in
five years.
Labor used the first parliamentary question time in six weeks to attack the government
over the rate rise, the third since Mr Howard won the 2004 election largely on a promise
