(The Daily Vidette) (U-WIRE) NORMAL, Ill. -- More than 11 million Americans live with food allergies -- the immune system's response to foods in which the body falsely detects as harmful.

For some, the mere opening of a bag of peanuts can trigger a dangerous reaction, which is why flight attendants pass out pretzels now instead of peanuts to passengers on an airplane.

While any food can contain allergens, there are eight that are most commonly found.

"The most common allergens are milk, peanuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish and egg and nuts," Dianne Feasley, registered dietitian for Illinois State University campus dining, said.
