KUALA LUMPUR: Colourful packets of spices and chilli powder line the shelves but some housewives pay scant attention to them.

With Hari Raya and Deepavali around the corner, they insist that any combination of spices that goes into the cooking pot has to be literally hand-picked, measured and ground.
