(Daily Trojan) (U-WIRE) LOS ANGELES -- Two letters to the editor printed in yesterday's Daily Trojan - which castigated the paper for featuring a Marshall student's bid to become Mr. Gay International and called his sexual orientation immoral - generated a swift reaction.
Nearly all the responses rightly took the original authors to task for their homophobic views. But many also faulted this newspaper for printing them at all. This is quite worrying.
America's free press - and therefore its democracy as a whole - depends on the "marketplace of ideas" first delineated by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
