CHICAGO — The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 make up an exclusive club, one the Ocean Tomo 300 patent index wants to join.

Launched last month by Ocean Tomo, a Chicago-based intellectual property firm, the new stock index consists of 300 diverse companies that Ocean Tomo ranks as having the strongest patent portfolios going.
