Federal Court gives Chia, Ishak third bite at cherry

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Eric Chia and religious teacher Ishak Shaari, whose criminal trials began in subordinate courts, will have an unprecedented third bite at the cherry.
The Federal Court, in the interest of justice, will hear their criminal appeals next year by invoking its inherent jurisdiction. In criminal trials, parties have two rights of appeal.
Chia's case started in the Sessions Court, while Ishak's was in the magistrate's court, and should have ended in the Court of Appeal.
