(The Daily Athenaeum) (CSTV U-WIRE) CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University women's basketball team brought momentum with it into its final non-conference game of the season against intrastate rival Marshall.

"I think (the team's confidence) is as high now as it was at the end of the Big East tournament last year," said head coach Mike Carey.

The Mountaineers kept that momentum on their side and extended their winning streak to five games by defeating the Thundering Herd 76-54 in the annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic in Charleston, W.Va.

West Virginia (13-7, 4-3) earned the win with strong defense and solid shooting.
