NSW:East Timorese soldiers asked newsmen if they wanted to flee

An inquest's been told East Timorese soldiers invited five Australian newsmen to flee
Balibo with them when invading Indonesian forces attacked .. but the journalists decided
to stay.

Official reports maintain the five were killed in crossfire while reporting on Indonesia's
invasion of East Timor .. but a series of witnesses have told the inquest the men were
executed by Indonesian troops.

A former East Timorese Fretilin soldier .. MANUEL GASPAR DA SILVA .. has told Glebe
Coroner's Court the journalists filmed the attack for a couple of minutes before returning
