Department of the Treasury Committee on House Budget February 16, 2007
Introduction Chairman Spratt, Ranking Member Ryan, and Members of the Committee,
I appreciate the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the
tax gap. The objective of our tax system is to fund the cost of government
operations. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) attempts to meet this objective
by administering a tax system that provides adequate funding for the Federal
Government while ensuring fairness to all taxpayers. But, as we know, the
system has failed to capture a significant amount of the tax revenue ...
