AFL: Multi-umpire trial goes off without hitch

MELBOURNE, Feb 25 AAP - AFL umpires' boss Jeff Gieschen admits tonight's nine-umpire
trial during a pre-season NAB Cup match proves adding more umpires and empowering them
will not have a massive impact on the game.
But he said the use of extra field and boundary umpires, and allowing field, boundary
and goal umpires to award free-kicks in Hawthorn's 24-point win over Melbourne at Telstra
Dome tonight had successfully acted as a deterrent to foul play.
Tonight's one-off trial was largely uneventful, with Glen Sinclair becoming the first
boundary umpire to award a free-kick in a serious AFL ...
