A single light bulb seems like such an inconsequential thing.

But is it? Replacing one traditional incandescent light with a compact fluorescent bulb will keep a half-ton of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere by the time it needs to be replaced. CFLs use 50 to 80 percent less energy and last 10 times longer than standard bulbs.
