(The Battalion) (U-WIRE) COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- It was founded in the 1870s as a land grant institution by its state government. It is one of only three public universities in the United States to have a corps of cadets program. It has historical athletic success and its athletes boast maroon uniforms. It started out as a mechanical and agricultural college but has developed into a balanced university over the past century. It has experienced great tragedy in the past decade, and yet its success as a university has not wavered.
