America's largest and wealthiest companies, and their advertisers, are paying big bucks to connect with college students. Some of the latest evidence came with corporate buyouts of Web sites heavily trafficked by students.

"These companies are trying to be part of the younger cohort's social space," says Ellen Hume, an independent media analyst and director of the Center on Media and Society at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
