Chief wants anti-gang unit -- Teaneck balks at cost of 14 more police

TEANECK — The police chief wants 14 more officers to help combat a growing gang problem, a costly request that township officials are hesitant to endorse.

"It's getting worse each year," Chief Paul Tiernan said of gang incidents in Teaneck. "We're seeing more violent crimes — the slashings, the guns."

The township has had a rash of gang-related violence in the past year, including the shooting death of a teenager outside a house party last summer.
