Everyone called him "Romp."
Merle Romprey, who died Wednesday at 75, served 23 years with Kennebunk Fire Rescue and owned Romp's Rubbish Removal. He was remembered Thursday by family and friends for his devotion to the fire squad and willingness to help others. He joined the department in 1960. Fire Chief Stephen Nichols said he would drop everything to answer a fire call.
