Fed: Caesareans rise as women become too posh to push: experts

By Jane Bunce

CANBERRA, May 16 AAP - Elective caesareans have almost doubled in the past two decades
for no good medical reason, new research shows.

Experts have attributed the rise to mothers-to-be requesting the procedure - possibly
due to social pressure or a mistaken belief it is safer than a natural delivery.

The researchers examined the more than 430,000 births in Western Australia from 1984 to 2003.

They found planned caesareans rose from six per cent to 13 per cent, even after excluding
medical and demographic reasons such as pregnancy complications and mothers giving birth
