Fed: NCA backs away from Albert Hall redevelopment

CANBERRA, May 22 AAP - The National Capital Authority has backed away from a major
redevelopment of Canberra's historic Albert Hall.

Thousands of angry Canberra residents signed petitions opposing the proposed redevelopment
of the area around Albert Hall, including plans for an open space precinct incorporating
tourism, entertainment and leisure activities.

The changes, part of a proposal known as Draft Amendment 53, included plans for low-rise
development and a pedestrian plaza on the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin.
