Keeping algae at bay in outdoor water spots

This year is the first time that I have had a water feature as part of my garden.

It's nothing major, just a half-whiskey-barrel-size tub with a small fountain.

Earlier this spring, I bought a couple of plants, and it was working swimmingly. No problems.

In the last couple of weeks, however, algae have started to develop. I have cleaned out the entire tub once, but I am worried that the algae will come back (and more frequently) as the hot and humid weather returns.
