Sometimes working 14-hour days behind her waist-high desk as the director of University of Oklahoma Student Media, she stands. When she rides the bus with only three other people, she stands.
She's on her feet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In one week, she walks about 50 miles: to the grocery store, to campus or to Target, for example.
After a long day of work, Smith goes home to relax but continues to stand. The pain is even worse when she sleeps, her only break from standing. Even then, she wakes often throughout the night.
