(Daily Collegian) (U-WIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- My first viewing of "Eastern Promises" called to mind the old cliche about a piece of art being "easier to admire than to love."

My second viewing convinced me that director David Cronenberg had expanded the crime film to new heights through, of all things, restraint and subtlety.

"Eastern Promises" is the second collaboration between Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen, who starred in 2005's "A History of Violence." Mortensen plays Nikolai, a driver for a Russian crime syndicate in London, a man strangely compassionate for a hardened criminal.
