Fed: Britain's Iraq troop drawdown signals progress: Downer
SYDNEY, Oct 9 AAP - Britain's decision to cut the number of its troops in Iraq by more
than half to 2,500 from early next year shows coalition forces are making progress, Foreign
Minister Alexander Downer says.
In a statement to the UK parliament Prime Minister Gordon Brown said force levels would
be drastically reduced as Britain handed over power in Basra province to Iraqi forces.
Mr Downer has welcomed the decision and Britain's move to "overwatch" status in the
southern Iraqi province, similar to Australia's role in the nearby Tallil region.
