(Washington Square News) (U-WIRE) NEW YORK -- Rabbi Sivan Maas said she believes God is a literary character -- and nothing more.
"God is a major part of my culture," she said. "When the Jewish story includes the deity, this character changes the story."
Maas, the first ordained Secular Humanistic Rabbi from Israel, spoke at the New York University Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life Monday night about her attempts to focus on a non-religious Jewish community in Israel and to create secular Jewish rites of passage. The lecture was produced in conjunction with the Center for Cultural Judaism.
