UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 24, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- Over the years, four
prisoners have been released from Japan's death row after being
proven innocent. Sakae Menda, the first of those prisoners,
recently spoke with IPS about the campaign against Japan's death
penalty.
Japan is the only member of the Group of Seven industrialized
nations other than the United States to retain capital punishment.
According to Amnesty International, 102 people are waiting to be
hanged in one of Japan's seven execution chambers, the largest
