Retailers estimated that 72 million consumers — nearly 20 percent more than last year — would shop online by day's end Monday, taking advantage of deep discounts from online retailers on what has come to be known as Cyber Monday.

Joe Tripodi ate lunch at Paramus Park mall on Monday but did his shopping in cyberspace. He planned to buy an LCD television on Circuit City's Web site later in the day.
