FED: Coastal drowning deaths down - report

SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - The number of coastal drowning deaths has fallen across Australia,
latest figures show.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) released its latest national coastal safety report
at Bondi Beach in Sydney today.

It showed there were 82 deaths in 2006-07, down from 96 in the previous period.

Of those deaths, 40 occurred in NSW, eight in Queensland, 12 in Western Australia,
11 in Victoria, four in South Australia, four in Tasmania and three in the Northern Territory.

Males accounted for 69 of the deaths, and 13 per cent involved alcohol and drugs.
