Fed: Wrongfully detained man granted residency

CANBERRA, Dec 19 AAP - A Vietnamese man stabbed and beaten after being wrongfully placed
in immigration detention has been granted permanent residency in Australia.

Tony Tran, 35, also known as Binh Van Tran, became one of the many victims of immigration
department bungling over the past few years.

Mr Tran was wrongly placed in detention in December 1999 after the department mistakenly
told him he had no right to be living in Australia.

In fact, the department was considering his application for permanent residency at
the time and had issued Mr Tran with a bridging visa.
