BEIJING, Jun. 18 (IPS) -- A week before President Bill Clinton
arrives in China on a landmark visit, Beijingers are divided on the
propriety of a planned official reception for him on Tiananmen
Square.
"Tiananmen is where the massacre took place," says Professor
Ding Zilin, whose son was killed during the bloody crackdown on
pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989. "It has become a symbol. It
is where numerous bare-handed people were brutally killed. The red
carpet Clinton will walk on is soaked with the blood of our
relatives."
