Societe Generale shares rose Wednesday on renewed speculation that HSBC, a British bank, would bid for it despite the French government's desire to keep Societe Generale in French hands.
The talk came as the Societe Generale board prepared an evening meeting to discuss plans to sell more shares as part of its efforts to rebuff any unwelcome offers.
