Franz Humer stepped down as chief executive of Roche Holding on Tuesday with a legacy of having transformed the company from the sick man of the European pharmaceutical sector to an industry leader.

Humer, 61, led Roche's drive to develop a leading line of cancer drugs. As he handed over his duties to Severin Schwan, formerly head of Roche's diagnostics unit, the company has the richest valuation of any large European pharmaceutical business and the most promising portfolio of new drugs.
