Bloody, pale and barely breathing, Peter Vukelich was found in a place known as "The Weeds," a tucked-away spot near the railroad bridge on St. John Street where homeless people in Portland go to drink beer and talk late into the night.

On Oct. 3, 2006, shortly after Vukelich was rushed to the hospital, the 49-year-old died.
