OTTAWA, Jun. 25 (IPS) -- Tension is rising between Canadian
authorities and the country's indigenous peoples over the natives'
loss of their sales tax exemption status.
A landmark court case on June 18 stripped Native Canadians of
their 235-year-old privilege to buy goods in non-native stores
without paying sales taxes. Now, the Quebec provincial government
wants to force reserves to charge sales taxes to non-natives on all
purchases made in stores in the native reserves.
The move threatens the trade of tax-free liquor and cigarettes
