DHAKA, Dec. 15 (IPS) -- Bangladesh faces a serious food
shortage, says the World Bank which has warned of widespread famine
unless the government urgently devises a development strategy to
bridge the gap between food production and population growth.
One of the world's poorest countries, Bangladesh is an agrarian
country of roughly 120 million people, most of whom are dependent
on the land for survival. But an unending cycle of floods and
drought, population pressure and scarcity of farm inputs have led
to a decline in agricultural production.
