OUAGADOUGOU, Dec. 14 (IPS) -- Agriculture has long been the
mainstay of Burkina Faso's economy, but now its government is aims
to cash in on the landlocked country's gold deposits and foreign
investors have been showing more than a little interest.
"The prospects in Burkina Faso are excellent," says E. Townsend
of the Anglo-American Corporation which has been operating in West
Africa for three years. "The country has considerable potential in
deposits of gold and other base metals."
Anglo-American is one of several companies expected to invest
in Burkina Faso's mining sector. Others include Dutch, Australian
